The Car first appeared pulled by Stepney in Stepney's Problem. The engines thought Stepney rather unusual pulling it around all day. Thomas then puffed in and asked Stepney why he was so sad pulling it.

Later on, after a series of Thomas talking to some engines: he realized what Stepney meant. Thomas then thought Stepney looked fine having him and Stepney find a friend in need.
